BICAL (bicalutamide 50 mg) is a prescription anti-androgen medication primarily used to treat advanced prostate cancer in men. It works by blocking the effects of male hormones like testosterone that stimulate the growth of cancer cells.

Key Information

  • Active Ingredient: Bicalutamide 50 mg.
  • Use: Treatment of metastatic prostate cancer (cancer that has spread to other parts of the body). It is typically used in combination with another hormone therapy called a luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) analog (e.g., goserelin or leuprolide).
  • Dosage: The recommended dose is one 50 mg tablet once daily, at the same time each day, with or without food.
  • Mechanism: Bicalutamide prevents testosterone from binding to androgen receptors on prostate cancer cells, which slows or stops the growth of the tumor.
  • Prescription: This is a prescription-only medication and should be used under medical supervision.

Important Precautions and Side Effects

  • Side Effects: Common side effects include hot flashes, breast tenderness/enlargement (gynecomastia), weakness, nausea, constipation, anemia, and dizziness.
  • Serious Side Effects: Rare but serious side effects can include liver problems (yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine, abdominal pain), allergic reactions, and lung inflammation. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any serious symptoms.
  • Monitoring: Regular blood tests, including liver function tests and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, are necessary during treatment.
  • Interactions: Bicalutamide may interact with blood thinners (like warfarin) and certain heart rhythm medications; inform your doctor about all medications you are taking.
  • Sun Sensitivity: The medication can increase skin sensitivity to sunlight, so take precautions like using sunscreen and wearing protective clothing when outdoors.
  • For Men Only: Bicalutamide is not for use in women or children. Men with female partners who could become pregnant must use effective contraception during treatment and for a specified period after stopping the medication.
